Requirements for the position

Education:    

  • Essential: 3 years diploma after secondary school in Midwivery and Desirable : Bachelor degree in Midwifery.
  • Essential: valid work permit as midwife technincan and desirable to have a degree as Midwife from Yemen medical council ( in Sanaa )

Experience:    

  • Essential: previous expeirence in the relevant field , desirable to have a minimum of 2 years of experience having experience in a similar position is a plus
  • Desirable previous experience with MSF or other NGOs

Languages:    

  • Essential Arabic and English

Other:    

  • Essential computer literacy (Word, Excel and Internet)

Description

Main objectives:    

  • Supervising, supporting and evaluating the team under his/her responsibility particularly midwives, midwife assistants and other related staff in her team such as cleaners. Planning and organizing their work (areas, days, absences, visits, holidays, etc) and coaching them in their work with special focus in following all appropriate protocols and procedures
  • Ensuring team work and a professional relationship between maternity and other departments.
  • Supervising the clinical activities in all the maternity departments and activities such as ante-natal consultations, delivery and after delivery follow up, post-natal consultations, family planning consultations, new-born vaccinations and liaising with the Medical Doctor about the patients who need special care times, visiting hours, etc.
  • Ensuring that the staff on duty knows, implements and follows at all times the universal hygiene standards/ precautions, bio-hazard prevention and infection control in the medical premises ensuring high standards of hygiene in the working environment
  • Ensuring that all staff using medical devices are qualified and trained, cleaning and minor maintenance tasks are performed according to the protocols, reporting any malfunction to the project biomedical service.
  • Being responsible for the department-related pharmacy activities (stock and consumption monitoring) as well as maintenance of the medical equipment
  • Being responsible for ensuring that all the administrative procedures, patients’ data and documents are filled in correctly and registered for compiling monthly reports reflecting the activity in the department.

Main responsibilities and tasks:    

Capacity Building

  • Active implementation of training and mentoring of the other midwives aiming to achieve full implementation of MSF obstetric protocols
  • Particiapte in organizing formal and bed side trainings (Bishop score,use of partograph, complicated deliveries, new-borns resuscitation, Apgar score, hygien etc).

Patient Management

  • Ensure that the newborn babies are followed up correctly since delivery and until discharge, making sure all babies are receiving the vaccination at birth.
  • Medical and random round to check all patients in the maternity, ensuring that the patients are receiving planned treatment. Ensure proper documentation in patients files.
  • Participate to clinical work when needed (gap filling, busy time).
  • Ensure the Standard precaution and hygiene are followed by all the staff in the maternity department and the rooms are cleaned according to the protocol
  • In collaboration with social worker, ensure that all patients in the unit are treated with dignity and respect at all time.
  • Work together with the lab supervisor to ensure safe and timely blood transfusion and result production.
  • Organize referrals together with the referral team.
  • Ensure proper handover between midwife supervisors between shifts.
  • Doing morbidity and mortality report with collberation with MWAM ( Midwives activity manager ) and Organise morbidity and mortality review on monthly basis.
  • Follow up admissions criteria in triage and make sure that the patient are distrubuted according to the criteria for every room.
  • Follow ward round and handover of patients every shift.
  • Supervise if food for the patients are brought and distributed on time.
  • Ensure all post c-sections patients are appropriately managed and report any change in the patients’ status.

Material Resource Management

  • Responsible for all biomed equipment in her department. Reporting of any malfunction to her supervisor.
  • Assess, identify and report any abnormal consumption of use of resources (Logistics and pharmacy supplies) to the MWAM.
  • Ensure that sterilized items are available and that medical sets are complete.
  • Prepare logistic (internal) and job requests according to the needs . Liaise with the hospital log if needed.
  • Monitor the transportation of the linen in the Hospital and Check for the availability of linen, delivery kits, water and electricity in the hospital at all times.

Pharmacy Management

  • Responsible for the pharmacy in her department. Ensure daily consumption record of drugs is done, and report of any lost to MWAM.
  • Perform the inventory and make order of the pharmacy monthly.
  • Perform regular inventory in all unit cupboards, distribute drugs and medical supplies according to the needs.
  • Maintain cold chain.
  • Make sure that the pharmacy items are used correctly and rationaly according to MSF protocols.
  • Organize and maintain the maternity pharmacy according to MSF standard, keeping it tidy and clean. Data Management
  • After discharge, ensure the patients files are classified per month and kept in a lockable cupboard, after veryfying data is complete in the file and in the register book. Ensure proper archiving of all patient files after use.
  • In collaboration with the registrars and data manager, ensure complete and accurate data collection in the registration books daily, data tools on weekly basis. Compile weekly and monthly reports accordingly.
  • Write a duty report and inform the MWAM if there is issue when you did night or weekend shift.
  • Document the findings in the night shift report book and share data to the night nurse supervisor to update daily hospital report.

Administrative Work

  • Carry out supervision of staff in maternity in roster shifts (day and night) and report promptly any concern to MWAM.
  • Prepare rosters and reorganize it according to annual leaves, unpaid leaves and absenteeism or others to avoid gaps.
  • Participate to meetings to better coordinate (supervisors meeting, medical meetings, breastfeeding meetings, Departmental meetings…). Organize ward meetings on a monthly basis.

Department Organisation

  • Supervise and organize the daily activities in the maternity according to MSF Policies.
  • Maintain a high level of organization of all the services.
  • Ensure the service is always sufficiently staffed and equipped to provide quality services.
  • Assign and delegate duties to staff adequately (tasks for midwives, midwife assistants, nurses, registrars and cleaners according to their job description and amount of activity).
  • Ensure MSF protocol and policies are respected in all activities in Maternity.
  • Ensure that the emergency box is always full, updated and available. Ensure the emergency bed is empty at all times and all equipment is well organised.
  • Participate in ground rounds to identfy any problems within the department and do follow up to make sure are done.

Conflict and Stress Management

  • Anticipate and manage complaints or difficult situations among the staff. Any misconduct or incidents need to be reported to the Midwife Activity Managers with the related incident report.
  • Promote constant teamwork and good working spirit to prevent stress in maternity departmernt. Team Management
  • Knows the procedure in case of accidental exposure to blood and inform the focal point of staff health as soon as possible in case of AEB.
  • Monitor the communication in between staff / patients / caretaker. Ensure all staff have equal informaton and receive proper communication at all times.
